　To all of you who have graduated from the Faculty of Marine Science, Faculty of Marine Life Science, Faculty of Marine Engineering, and Faculty of Marine Resources and Environment, to all of you who have completed the Department of Marine Science, and to all of you who have completed the first and second half of the doctoral course, I would like to congratulate you today.The end is approaching for measures against the new coronavirus infectious disease that has cast a shadow over our daily lives for a long time, and many of you are filled with a refreshing feeling, like a ray of light shining from the sky after the rain. Isn't it?It seems that the cherry blossoms in full bloom are celebrating everyone's new beginnings.Normally, family members and relatives would also be able to attend, but the off-campus venue that we used every year closed at the end of September last year, so this year we will be holding multiple events at the Etchujima Kaikan Auditorium. We decided to hold the graduation ceremony separately.There is some concern from the perspective of preventing infection from holding a long ceremony in this size of the auditorium. 　Over the past three years, you have faced many trials caused by the novel coronavirus infection, and you have spent days that did not go as planned.I think that every day was far from the student life I had imagined.Under such circumstances, I would like to express my sincere respect to all of you who have achieved the single big goal of graduation and completion of your studies.Before you stand on the new start line of your life, look back on the days you've worked hard and praise yourself today.And I would like you to share this joy with your family and friends.

　By the way, the society surrounding us has changed greatly due to the pandemic of the new coronavirus infection over the past three years.We have experienced revolutionary and irreversible changes due to digital technology in familiar places such as online classes, telework, telemedicine, and digital currency.Another major change that has been attracting attention recently is the remarkable progress in AI technology based on big data.Recently, OpenAI's ChatGPT and Microsoft's Bing AI chat function have become hot topics, and last week's news reported that GPT-4 scored in the top 10% of the U.S. Unified Bar Examination. had been taken up.Driven by my curiosity, I tried using ChatGPT, but I felt threatened that the so-called singularity, a technological turning point where AI surpasses human intelligence, is just around the corner.

　When I wanted to know the details of actual AI technology, at the cyber symposium regularly held by the National Institute of Informatics in early March, Professor Sadao Kurohashi of Kyoto University said, "ChatGPT mechanism and I was blessed with the opportunity to listen to a lecture titled “Impact on Society.”As a result, I was somewhat relieved about the arrival of the singularity.Briefly, the technology used is neural natural language processing, which trains a large database of natural language, called a corpus, so that the response sentence consists of the most frequently used sequences of words. 　Here, I would like to emphasize one thing about the difference between AI and humans.We can choose for ourselves what we learn.You can also revisit all angles to see if your conclusions are correct.I hope that you will acquire the ability to discern the truth, aim for what you believe is right, learn a lot with a humble attitude, and tackle the various challenges you will encounter in society. .Another advantage that humans have over AI is that they can learn from things that are not stored in a database.Through seeing, hearing, smelling, and touching, we can learn something from all things in the universe.In addition, everyone who studied at Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology has learned research methods to elucidate the laws of nature and the technology to create a database of independently obtained knowledge, in other words, to write papers. In order for AI to be truly useful to society, not only computer engineers and computer programmers, but also numerous engineers and researchers who face problems that no one has yet encountered in the field and somehow derive the optimal solution.
